PRESIDENT

Born one of four children, to successful Italian immigrants in Bakersfield, Michael graduated from UCLA with a BA in Psychology, then obtained a Masters in Urban Planning from Cal Poly Pomona. As a United Nations Volunteer sponsored by the Peace Corps, he spent 1976-79 in Botswana as a village development planner. He then became a planner for Merced County, Community Development Director for the City of Tracy, and Facility Planner/Director of Maintenance for the Merced Union High School District for 22 years. He married Christine Krebs in 1984 and they raised a daughter and three grandchildren. Upon retirement he served on the Merced City Council for five years. He was president of the Merced Host Lions Club in 1994 and president of the Breakfast Lions Club in 2019-20.

James Zimmerman serves the UC as the Senior Associate Vice Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Education. A nuclear scientist with a long interest in learning and teaching issues, James has participated in faculty professional development activities at the local, national, and international level. These activities have included the development of a Teaching Fellowship program that supports faculty interested in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning studies. Dr. Zimmerman has been a member of the Merced Breakfast Lions since 2017.
